The greenest way to travel

If you want to cut the footprint of your travels without cutting the distance, take the bus. Per passenger-kilometre, a well-filled coach produces less CO2 than cars, planes and even many trains - a fact that rarely makes headlines but should.

The arithmetic is simple: one coach can replace thirty or more cars on the road. Fill those seats and the emissions per traveller drop to a fraction of what the same journey costs the atmosphere by private car.

Bus fleets are getting cleaner too. Euro VI diesels emit a fraction of the pollutants of older generations, and electric and hybrid coaches are appearing on regional routes across Europe.

Green travel does not have to mean staying home. Sometimes it just means choosing the seat that shares the journey with fifty other people.
