I had never thought before that I will ever go to Mesopotamia. This ancient name takes me back to school history books. Tigris and Euphrates, the cradle of civilizations and so on. These names always conjured great pictures in my head and teased my mind.Of course, the main part and historical sites of Mesopotamia are in the devastated by war state of Iraq. But I was still very excited when we came to the Eastern Turkey to be around these ancient places.
I wanted to see Euphrates but I did not expect we are going to hitchhike and take a ferry across Euphrates. We planned to visit Nemrut mountain with its famous stone heads starting in the morning from Sanliurfa, but ended up in Mardin in the evening.
Do you know that the Euphrates is the longest and one of the most historically important rivers of Western Asia?
It originates in eastern Turkey & flows through Syria and Iraq to join the Tigris in the Shatt al-Arab, which empties into the Persian Gulf.
So here we were on a ferry crossing this famous & ancient river. I would have never thought before that I would come to this area. I would love to love to visit Iraq and see the heart of Mesopotamia, but I am afraid it is not a good time now.
