“Rape of Nanking” Memorial in Nanjing

If you visit the city of Nanjing, 99,99% you will visit the Memorial dedicated to the grim event of WW2 called the Rape of Nanking.

The Nanking Massacre or Nanjing Massacre, also known as the Rape of Nanking, was a mass murder, and war rape that occurred during the six-week period following the Japanese capture of the city of Nanjing (Nanking), the former capital of the Republic of China, on December 13, 1937 during the Second Sino-Japanese War. During this period hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians and disarmed soldiers were murdered by soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army. Widespread rape and looting also occurred. Historians and witnesses have estimated that 250,000 to 300,000 people were killed. Several of the key perpetrators of the atrocities, at the time labelled as war crimes, were later tried and found guilty at the Nanjing War Crimes Tribunal, and were subsequently executed.

European history is full of terrible events. For me coming from Ukraine which was completely devastated during WW2, and where each family was affected by t, this memorial was a must to visit. Besides my granddad was fighting against Japan in the Far East during WW2, and used to live in Port Artur, present China.

The memorial is organized as a park with several buildings and various statues and symbolic constructions in between.

For whom the bell tolls….300 000 victims

One of the halls was built above a mass grave where thousands of victims were buried.

An accurate estimation of the death toll in the massacre has not been achieved because most of the Japanese military records on the killings were deliberately destroyed or kept secret shortly after the surrender of Japan in 1945.

The International Military Tribunal of the Far East estimates more than 200,000 casualties in the incident; China’s official estimate is about 300,000 casualties, based on the evaluation of the Nanjing War Crimes Tribunal. Estimates from Japanese historians vary widely, in the vicinity of 40,000–200,000.

Some historical revisionists even deny that a widespread, systematic massacre occurred at all, claiming that any deaths were either justified militarily, accidental or isolated incidents of unauthorized atrocities. These revisionists claim that the characterization of the incident as a large-scale, systematic massacre was fabricated for the purpose of political propaganda.

Folders with names of victims

The collection of documents and photos seems to be very impressive and shocks how humans can become so fiercely violent and kill old people, women and kids.

But there was one strange thing which struck me. In different places of the memorial different numbers of victims were mentioned: 200 000, then 290 000, etc. 90 thousand people is not a small amount.

When i saw the poster below I became even more suspicious. The memorial was built on the place of a mass grave of 10 000 people and only 208 skeletons were excavated. Where are the rest 9 792 skeletons? How did they allow to perform construction works on the place which holds real proof of the killings of civilians? And why they excavated them only in 1998 & 1999, so many years after it happened and after the Trial took place?

Some statistics

This all looks quite suspicious and after I came back from China, i searched online and found some resources which tell a different story of the event. It reminded me of people who question statistics of Holocaust in Europe. They don’t deny it happened, they are just saying that the amount of people are exaggerated. For some reason if you deny Holocaust you may end up in jail.

It is not for me to judge what is truth. Of course, we should remember such terrible events as Holocaust or Rape of Nanking. People should be punished for killing helpless women and kids. But people should not manipulate the truth in political or other interests. As they say: History is written by winners.
